Year 12 - WC April 22nd 2024

The last full week of April, and what a busy week!

Don't be alarmed at all the bodies at the start of the video, in Be The Best You we practised putting people into the recovery position. 

In HE we made a club sandwich. I'd be surprised if any made it home, they were devoured in seconds!

C'est la vie in The World Around Us as we started our new topic of France. 

We finished off our Maths work on money before we move onto our new topic. Only TIME will tell what it will be. 

In English, we finished off our punctuation work. 

At SERC, we made delicious sausage rolls and beautiful clay mugs with Carolyn and Hannah. 

We practised our stability as we weaved between cones and dodged oncoming traffic in cycling proficiency.

Year 12 - WC April 15th 2024

Where did that week go?

In Home Management, we made some delicious golden syrup noodles with broccoli. The best bit - it was all made in one pan, perfect for the washing up!

For Maths, we continued working with money and getting the correct change. 

In English, we worked on our punctuation and spelling skills. 

At SERC, we made chocolate chip cookies with Clare and frottage (rubbings) with Hannah. Amazing work all round! 

For Pupil Choice, we looked at Irish folklore and the malevolent creatures in them.

Year 12 - WC April 8th 2024

And so starts the last term of Year 12!

It might have been a four day week, but it was still packed!

In Maths, we worked with money and worked out the change after buying different items.

For English, we continued our work on punctuation and phonics skills. 

In The World Around Us, we looked at the Roman Gods and made our own Vesuvius Volcano. I'm glad we made these outside!

At SERC, we made soda bread pizzas with Carolyn and pointillism with Hannah.

Year 12 - WC March 18th 2024

The last week of term! Where did that term go?

This week, we continued working with money in Maths. 

Continuing the trade them, in The World Around Us, we built our own empires like the Romans by growing different resources. Alliances were made and broken, cities pillaged, armies attacked. It was all very Game of Thrones! 

In PE, we practised shooting hoops in basketball. 

At SERC, we made Easter Buns and 'Bark' with Carolyn and drew still life pictures with Hannah.

Year 12 - WC March 11th 2024

The penultimate week of this term!

This week, we designed a social media app in Be The Best You. We thought about what our app should do, and how we can make sure it is safe for everyone to use. 

In Home Management, we used filo pastry to make party pizzas. Different, but good different.

The World Around Us kicked off by looking at Italy and creating a fact sheet. We learnt how Rome began with the tale of Romulus and Remus. 

For English, we practised our spellings using Wordle. 

With Mrs Gallagher, we continued improving our gymnastics.

At SERC, we made stuffed baked potatoes and cheesecake with Carolyn, and made birds using our body parts and made secret pictures with Hannah. 

Friday saw the finale of Killard's Masked Singer Competition for Red Nose Day. An amazing show all round and congratulations to Clown/Mrs McRoberts on winning.

Year 12 - WC March 4th 2024

What a week! We really are marching into March!

In Be The Best You, Year 12 learnt how everything you put online is there forever. It is amazing what you can find doing a quick Google search! We talked about how we are all connected and how quickly information can be passed between people, especially online. 

In Maths, we practised our number skills. 

We practised our phonics and punctuation in English. 

At SERC, we finished our clay work with Hannah and made milkshakes and sandwiches or wraps with Carolyn.

Year 12 - WC February 26th 2024

Then it was March!

This week in English, we worked on our phonics skills. 

In Maths, we have almost finished our unit on Measure after we weighed different items around the classroom. 

With Mrs Gallagher in PE, we practised our gymnastics and competed to see who could hold the bar the longest. 

At SERC, we made smoothies with Carolyn and worked with clay with Hannah.

Year 12 - WC February 19th 2024

First week done! Another busy week in Year 12.

In Home Management, we made pancakes. We even tried flipping them. Don't look too close at the HE ceiling!

For ICT, we started our new unit on Creative Design. We started to learn how to use Canva to create a New Year's Eve Poster. 

In PE with Mrs Gallagher, Year 12 completed a gymnastics obstacle course. 

In English, we are looking at phonics to help us spell tricky words. 

At SERC, Hannah taught us how to draw a portrait in the style of Picasso, and Carolyn taught us how to make tea and coffee.

Year 12 - WC February 5th 2024

There goes the first half term of 2024!

As it is Children's Mental Health Week, in Be The Best You we looked at what matters to us and others show we matter to them. 

In Home Management, we made delicious Pop-tarts. 

In English, we practised our questioning skills. 

In PE, Mrs Gallagher taught Year 12 how to pass and dribble in basketball. 

At SERC, Carolyn taught us the basics for working in an industrial kitchen, and Hannah taught us colour theory. 

It was like Supermarket Sweep as we had the Killard Bring and Buy Sale. So many bargains to be had.

Year 12 - WC January 29th 2024

Goodbye January. Hello February!

For Be The Best You, we looked at a healthy diet. We made breakfast, lunch and dinner order from McDonald's and compared the numbers with our Recommended Daily Intake. 

In Home Management, we made some garlic naan bread.

We have finished our Personal Skills unit on Unfamiliar Places. Great work Year 12!

In Maths, we continued to measure the lengths of different objects. 

Mrs Gallagher taught Year 12 how to play basketball in PE. They were so good, she must have thought she was teaching the Harlem Globetrotters. 

In English, we practised our question skills to find out information from our peers. 

On Wednesday, we were invited to the Beehive Cafe by Year 13 who were the best hosts. Thank you to Year 13 and Mr Marshall for the delicious toasties and amazing activities. 

This was the last week with Hannah and Carolyn before we swap groups at SERC. Hannah taught us how to draw portraits and Carolyn helped us finish off coursework. 

This week, Pupil Choice was board games. Even though there were tense times through the games, everyone was a good sport.

Year 12 - WC January 22nd 2024

What a busy week in Year 12!

For Be The Best You, we thought about how our skin is like a sponge and what we do to it can have a lasting effect. We used a cleanser and moisturiser to practise how we can take better care of our skin. 

In English, we practised asking questions to develop our communication skills.

For Maths, we measured different objects within the classroom using 30cm ruler, 1m ruler and a trundel wheel. 

With Mrs Gallagher we developed our catching skills in PE. 

Hannah and Carolyn got the pleasure of coming to Killard this week to continue our work at SERC. We painted our birds with Hannah and completed written work with Carolyn. 

For Pupil Choice, we looked at how fashion has changed throughout history then designed outfits of the future.

Year 12 - WC January 15th 2024

It's a bit chilly in Year 12 this week!

Year 12 made some delicious blueberry muffins in Home Management.

In Personal Skills, we looked at the risks that can occur when travelling in an unfamiliar place. We practised navigating to our seat while wearing a blind fold, as this can be how we feel when we are lost in somewhere we have never been before. 

In Maths, we started our new unit Measure. We practised measuring items around the Hutch with our hands, feet and pencils. 

In English, we started our topic on discussions looking at how we can communicate our thoughts respectfully. 

We had great fun in the snow on Wednesday. No one was safe from a snowball attack.

Year 12 - WC 8th January

First full week 0f 2024 done!

On Monday, Year 12 made breakfast baps with Mrs Hammond.

In Maths, we practised our doubling and halving by playing Connect 4. There was some very tactical dice rolls going on!

In English, we worked on our punctuation skills and how we can use exclamation marks to make a point. 

For Personal Skills, we got lost! Not really, we thought about what would help us if we got lost and went into Donaghadee to find some examples. 

At SERC, we created a flock of birds with Hannah. We used our hands to make wings, and then sculpted our birds in clay. At Alternate-SERC, we made pizzas with Mr McCormick and Mr Marshall. As the Italians say it was "molto bene".

In Leisure Activities with Mr Scates, Lynette and Jim from Donaghadee Bowling Club came in and gave us tips for our bowling.

Year 12 - WC January 1st

Happy New Year! It is great to be back. It has been lovely to hear everyone's news from the holidays, and how they managed to stay on Santa's nice list!

It was New Year, Improved Me in Year 12 as we created our class New Year Resolutions. Hopefully we can keep them throughout the month!

In English, disaster struck as Skulduggery was kidnapped by Serpine leaving Stephanie all alone. 

For Leisure Activities with Mr Scates, Year 11 & 12 played lawn boules and completed a gruelling circuit training. There will be some sore arms tomorrow.

Another busy week in Year 12!
Panto rehearsals are continuing as we prepare for our show on Friday 15th December at 10am. We hope to see you there!

At SERC, we made Christmas Brownies with Clare and Carolyn, and festive craft with Hannah.

Only two weeks to go to the big day!

In between rehearsals, Year 12 haven't stopped. We have created a budget for a party, worked on our spellings, made paninis and created Christmas artwork.

Year 12 - WC November 20th 2023

Another busy week in Year 12.

On Monday, we listened to Oddball talk about testicular cancer.

In Personal Skills, we thought about how we can keep ourselves safe when we are out and about. We completed an observation challenge but we all didn't see the child dressed in black! An especially important message on these dark nights. 

In English, we practised our punctuation skills. 

In Maths, we had a cowboy showdown as we competed in a multiplication 'shoot-out'. Dakota the Terrible and Trapper the Back-stabbing were our victors!

We had a visit from Ray the Bubble Man. We could have stayed out all day making the bubbles! 

With Mr Yeaman, Year 12 played curling and started to vault.

At SERC, we made ink prints with Hannah and Fifteens with Carolyn.

Year 12 - WC November 13th 2023

Where did that week go?

You'd think we were sponsored by the letter P this week - PE, Punctuation, Products, Pudsey and Panto!

With Mr Yeaman, we practised our gymnastics by forward-rolling. 

In English, we practised our question marks. 

We continued to double and half in Maths.

We are getting into the swing of panto. Everyone is non-stop working to get ready for our show. 

On Friday, to celebrate Children in Need, we had a Pudsey Bear Hunt around the school. Mr Marshall and Year 13&14 completed the 1000 Bear-pee challenge with Year 12. It was great to see everyone take part!

Year 12 - WC November 6th 2023

First week back. It feels like we were never away!

In Maths, we started our a new topic on multiplying. We doubled and halved everything!

For English, we practised using question marks and exclamation marks in our punctuation. 

With Mr Yeaman, we practised our gymnastics by balancing and rolling., 

At SERC, we made burgers with spicy wedges with Clare and made Greek vases in Art with Hannah.

The Hutch and Hive Halloween Movie Madness

Year 12 - WC October 23rd 2023

And that was the last week of half-term. 

Our cafe skills were put to the test this week as we cooked, served and ordered real food. It was great to see everyone using the skills we practised over the last weeks.

In Home Management, we made chocolate apples and ghost biscuits. 

With Mr Yeaman, Year 12 played dodgeball.

In English, we practised our listening and memory skills. 

For Maths, we completed our Data unit. Amazing work everyone!

At SERC, we created pointillist pictures with Sharon and made cupcakes and cookies with Carolyn.

Year 12 - WC October 16th 2023

Only one week left!

Another busy week in Year 12.

For Be The Best You, we continued to practise our serving skills as we role-played a cafe. It was great to see how we have improved before next week when we use real food.

In Home Management, we made fruit crumble. The elbow grease was flowing as we mixed our oat topping.

For English, we continued working on our punctuation skills. 

With Mr Yeaman in PE, Year 12 practised passing on the rugby ball while moving. 

In Maths, we have almost finished our Data unit. So much amazing work over the last few weeks. 

At SERC, we finished our clay pots and started to make clay houses with Hannah. With Carolyn and Clare, we made delicious pizza-topped baked potatoes

The House Cup challenge returned with a spook-tacular challenge from Miss Lowry. We had to create a banquet for the Monsters Halloween Party. I'm not sure how I feel about eating zombie fingers!

It was lovely to see so many parents and guardians at Options morning on Tuesday. This was a great opportunity for Year 12 to start thinking about their future.

Year 12 - WC October 9th 2023

What do you mean there are only two weeks left of term?

Time flies when you're having fun. 

In Be The Best You, we practised ordering, serving and making food in a shop. It was great to see everyone taking part and there were no awkward customers!

For Home Management, we made Pain Perdu (French Toast to you and me). Our cooking skills are getting even better with so many helping each other. 

We have almost completed our topic on Personal Details in English. 

For Personal Skills, we looked at what made a good teacher. We noticed that what was important wasn't connected to their gender, race, age etc. 

In Horticulture, we continued to clear the site ready for the next phase of planting. 

At SERC, we made wax paintings and painted our clay pots. With Claire, we made Caesar Salad and sandwiches. Everyone was really impressed with how hard everyone worked and how we helped each other.

Year 12 - WC October 2nd 2023

And that was the first week in October done!

For Home Management, we made Ribbon Pasta with carrots and courgettes. It was so delicious, I believe some might not have made the journey home!

In English, we practised our personal details by looking at titles, first names and surnames. 

For Horticulture, we planted our sensory garden with herbs, ferns and grasses. 

In Maths, we started our coursework on data handling as we thought about how we can categorise items, and how to sequence items.

With Mr Yeaman, we learnt how to kick and pass rugby balls. 

We travelled to Crommelin Wood and the Moat for travelling training. 

At SERC, we made smoothies with Caroline and clay pots and autumnal pictures with Hannah. 

Year 12 - WC September 25th 2023

How is it the end of September already?

In Maths, we started our new topic of data. We created bar charts of peoples favourite fruit and vegetables. 

On Monday, Matthew from Volunteer NI spoke to Year 12, 13 and 14 about how and why they should volunteer. It was great to hear from some pupils who already volunteer in their community. 

For English, we started our topic on Personal Information and completed application forms. 

In Horticulture, we tested out our new plants for our sensory garden. We loved tasting the herbs and feeling the different textures of our plants. 

For Home Management, we make our own toast. 

In Pupil Choice, we learnt about the Greek Gods. We found out what each god was in charge of, what gave them power and what animals did they use.

At SERC, we made portraits with Hannah and tea and coffee with Caroline.

Year 12 - WC September 18th 2023

And then it was three! Time flies when your having fun. 

In English, we worked on our punctuation and how we can make our writing exciting. 

The fingers and toes were out in Maths as we practiced our column addition and subtraction.

In Be The Best You, we learnt to tie our ties. 

With Mr Yeaman, Year 12 played rugby. 

For Home Management, we made delicious cheese soda bread. 

Due to SERC's strike action, Year 12 and 13 stayed within school. For cookery, pupils made fifteens with Mr Marshall, and for art we made texture collages using rubbings. 

In ICT, we practised our typing skills.

Year 12 - WC September 11th 2023

Two weeks done and dusted!

For Pupil Choice, its was all 'bunny ears' as we practised tying our shoelaces. 

We has a 'cracking' good time in Home Management when we made scrambled eggs on toast. It was great to see so many cooking independently. 

During Personal Skills, we looked at how our words make a difference (even to plants) and what is bullying and how we can stop it. 

In Horticulture, we prepared our planters ready for planting. 

We had to keep our heads down in PE as we played dodgeball.

At SERC, we got straight into work cleaning the kitchen and painting warm and cold colours.

W/C 4th September 2023

Welcome to Year 12!

What an amazing first week. It was great to hear everyone's summer news.

In Home Management, Year 12 practiced our cutting skills by making chip butties from scratch! No fingers were lost while we used the 'bridge' and 'claw' to cut our potatoes into either thin fries or big chips. 

Red pens were at the ready during English as we became teachers to mark Mr McCormick's punctuation mistakes. We started our class novel Skulduggery Pleasant. After her Uncle died, Stephanie has inherited his house and all his money. Unfortunately, her uncle has a key which some rather bad people want. Where is the key? What does the key open? And, more importantly, how did Skulduggery become a fire wielding skeleton detective?

In Maths, we practised our adding and column addition. 

On Thursday, we went to SERC for a familiarisation tour with Year 13 and Mr Marshall. It was great to talk with Year 13, who went last year to SERC, and ask lots of questions. We enjoyed buying our lunch at Greggs and Subway. Is it even a trip to Bangor if you don't go to Pickie for an ice cream?
