The Communication Tree is a simple visual to help us understand how communication develops. The skills at the bottom (roots and trunk) support the development of the skills higher up (branches/leaves/blossom). It is important that children’s attention, listening and interaction skills are supported. Difficulties in these areas are likely to impact on the growth of areas above (using and understanding language). The Communication Tree also acknowledges the best conditions for a child to develop communication skills. This means that children need adult interaction and modelling language (sun) as well as time and opportunities (rain).
