Welcome to P1!

We are delighted to welcome your child as they start their learning journey in Killard House School! We provide a caring and nurturing environment, where each child is valued and loved.  We believe that every child is unique, and we provide an individual Early Year's Curriculum tailored to the specific needs of each child. This includes the use of a range of strategies and activities such as TACPAC, Sensology, Attention Autism, Messy Play, Outdoor Learning, Sensory Circuit, Music and Pet therapy.  Through carefully planned play opportunities, each child is given the opportunity to experiment, explore, discover, imagine, create, and make sense of the world around them.

We aim to support and encourage communication skills (PECS, Makaton, visuals, verbal), social emotional skills, and life skills. We provide a safe and friendly environment to build positive relationships with adults and peers in the room. We look forward to welcoming you and to work alongside parents to help each child learn, have fun, and grow to reach their full potential in P1!

September Highlights

P1 McK/P have settled into Killard House brilliantly - we are so proud of you! We have all really enjoyed learning about Nursery Rhymes this month including 'Incy Wincy Spider', 'Miss Polly had a Dolly', 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'Wheels on the Bus'. We have had lots of fun with topic related crafts, sensory play, cookery as well as enjoying exploring the different activities available in school such as Soft Play, Sensory Room and the outdoor playgrounds. A super start to the year P1!

We continued with our nursery rhyme topic before doing all things Autumn and Halloween. We have experienced so many of our favourite nursery rhymes through lots of lovely songs and play experiences. We have had so much fun cooking, crafting, dancing, and getting very messy. The cleaners were kept VERY busy in our room this month. In amongst all the fun we have been working really hard learning to spell our names and doing practical investigations of mathematical concepts. We ended a wonderful half term with our Halloween Bop! Everyone looked fabulous in their costumes!

P1 have really enjoyed exploring our new topic 'Fairy Tales'. We have been listening to the sensory stories 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears', 'Little Red Riding Hood', and 'The Gingerbread Man', as well as exploring the stories through sensory play! In our roleplay area, we have enjoyed making porridge in 'The Three Bears' house, having princess tea parties and going on a Gruffalo Hunt! Some of our fun November highlights also include 'puddle jumping', our Princess Pizza party and a visit from the Bubble Man to school!

P1 have had a super time with Christmas activities during December. We have explored lots of different Christmas sensory play, Christmas crafts and made some lovely Gingerbread biscuits. We all enjoyed dressing up as elves to work in our role play Santa’s workshop, and we loved singing a special song for our school Christmas bauble dressed as snowmen, Santa and reindeers!! Everyone had a brilliant time jumping on a Christmas globe bouncy castle during our school fun day. Happy Christmas everyone!

We enjoyed learning about our new topic ‘Winter and Animals’ during January. We have experienced lots of different textures such as ice balloons, shredded paper, foam and icing sugar during our play. We have been sharing some lovely ‘Winter’ stories, and worked hard to develop our self-help skills by dressing up in Winter clothes. P1 all loved playing in our Winter wonderland igloo. We also had a brilliant trip to ‘The Walled Garden’ in Bangor.

February arrived with some snow! P1 loved experiencing the snow, making footprints and throwing snowballs. We continued to explore arctic animals and enjoyed making potato print penguins, sponge printed igloos and snowflakes during art activities. We all loved music and movement, especially moving like penguins and practising stopping during our ‘Freeze’ song. We also enjoyed going on a woodland walk to hunt for signs of ‘Winter’ and animals in our environment.

During March, we had so much fun learning about Super Heroes. Through sensory play, craft, cookery, and sensology, we explored the jobs of people who help us (doctors, firemen, policemen etc) as well as learning about our favourite super hero characters! We enjoyed a brilliant trip to Crawfordsburn Glen, as well as performing a bunny song for parents at our Easter Extravaganza. Everyone had a great time on World Book day, dressing up as our favourite story book characters. Happy Easter everyone!

P1 have really enjoyed learning about our new ‘Farm’ topic. We have enjoyed listening to sensory stories, such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘The Little Red Hen’, and we have had fun counting farm animals on the Interactive Whiteboard. Everyone has loved buying fruit and vegetables from our class farm shop, and we have loved exploring lots of messy play activities related to Spring and the Farm. As the weather improved, we have been able to do lots of outdoor learning activities, including going on a ‘Spring Hunt’ and ‘Attention Autism’ outside. Well done P1, great learning!
