Jess's class
Welcome to the Haven!
In our class we believe every child deserves a nurturing, supportive environment where they feel safe and valued. Joanne, Ben, Ally and myself support our class and work closely together to ensure each child's needs are met through a fun, meaningful and real-life context.
We follow the Equals Informal Curriculum which is child-led and focuses on hands on experiences. Learning in our classroom is built around practical, real-world activities that promote independence, communication, problem solving, and social interaction. Each child takes part in outdoor exploration, community based tasks and creative projects that encourage curiosity and resilience. The emphasis is on learning through experience, play and adventure helping each child build confidence and transferable skills that support their every day life.
This term we have been focusing on the core word 'help' which is naturally promoted through collaborative, fun, and hands on activities to both ask for help and offer help to others.

Our Classroom Environment
Our classroom is inviting, exploratory and flexible. It is a spacious room and it is divided into flexible, purposeful zones that encourage movement and choice. The indoor environment includes cozy corners and flexible seating. It includes a sensory room quiet and comfortable with soft furnishings and sensory toys for emotional regulation. The outdoor classroom offers opportunities for movement with the swings, water play and sand. Our classroom is a place for discovery through a free flow approach connecting the indoor and outdoor environments that encourages child-led exploration. Children are encouraged to follow their interests, make choices, and take safe risks.
November Highlights
This month we are exploring ‘Light and Dark’ topic. Children collected natural materials to make their own paintbrushes and used dark colours to create night-sky artwork. They have been exploring seasonal changes learning about hibernation and nocturnal animals. We have also been discussing how to stay safe during the darker evenings. This topic encourages curiosity, creativity, and an understanding of the natural world.
October Highlights
We have been exploring the changes in season. The children have been exploring the changes that happen in autumn through sensory play, outdoor learning, and creative activities. They have discovered colourful leaves, cooler weather, and the world around them, building curiosity, communication, and independence as they learn about change in a fun and engaging way.
September Highlights
In term 1 we have been exploring All About Me. Our theme supports pupils in developing self-awareness, communication, and independence through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Our children explore who they are, their likes and dislikes, emotions, and relationships, while learning key life skills such as making choices and caring for themselves. Through sensory play, storytelling, music, and outdoor learning, our pupils build confidence, develop a sense of belonging, and celebrate what makes them unique.
