The Hive is Killard House’s Key Stage 5 provision, supporting young people to develop the skills, confidence and independence they need as they prepare for adulthood. Our curriculum is built around the Preparing for Adulthood outcomes of Employability, Independent Living, Community Inclusion, and Health & Wellbeing, providing meaningful, personalised and practical learning experiences that build on pupils’ previous achievements.

Learning in The Hive is centred around real-life experiences and learning by doing. Pupils develop employability skills through work experience, volunteering, enterprise activities and opportunities within our Bee Hive Café. They also develop independence through cooking, shopping, budgeting, travel training and accessing community facilities, while taking part in a wide range of leisure, fitness and wellbeing activities. Programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh provide opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork, leadership and confidence.

Our aim is to ensure that every young person leaves The Hive with greater independence, confidence and a strong sense of their own strengths and aspirations. Through partnerships with local businesses, community organisations and external providers, alongside our developing Year 15 provision, we provide opportunities for pupils to consolidate their learning, take on responsibility and explore their future pathways. The Hive is about preparing our young people not just for their next destination, but for life beyond school.
